Background of the study
Morphemic boundaries are crucial for understanding the structure and meaning of words. In Nigerian indigenous languages spoken in Oyo State, these boundaries can be obscured by complex morphological processes such as affixation, reduplication, and compounding (Okoro, 2023). This study evaluates the delineation of morphemic boundaries in selected indigenous languages by analyzing phonological cues and morphological markers. Using a combination of acoustic analysis and linguistic fieldwork, the research documents how speakers segment words into morphemes, and examines the impact of dialectal variation and language contact on these boundaries. The investigation seeks to clarify theoretical issues surrounding morpheme segmentation and to provide practical insights for developing language teaching materials and computational linguistic models for these languages (Ibrahim, 2024). The study also considers the role of oral tradition and historical language change in shaping current morphological structures, thereby contributing to the broader field of African linguistics.

Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of morphemic analysis in understanding language structure, there is limited systematic research on morphemic boundaries in Nigerian indigenous languages in Oyo State. Inadequate data on how speakers perceive and produce morphemic divisions hampers effective language teaching and computational modeling (Chinwe, 2023). This study addresses this gap by analyzing the phonological cues that indicate morphemic boundaries and examining the influence of dialectal and contact phenomena on these boundaries.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document morphemic boundaries in indigenous languages of Oyo State.
  2. To analyze phonological cues and morphological markers.
  3. To propose frameworks for teaching and computational modeling.

Research questions:

  1. How are morphemic boundaries defined in these languages?
  2. What phonological cues indicate morphemic segmentation?
  3. How can these findings inform language instruction?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Clear phonological cues define morphemic boundaries.
  2. Dialectal variation affects boundary perception.
  3. Frameworks based on these findings improve teaching outcomes.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive evaluation of morphemic boundaries in Nigerian indigenous languages in Oyo State, offering valuable data for linguists, educators, and computational modelers. The findings will enhance language instruction and support efforts to preserve indigenous linguistic heritage (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to selected Nigerian indigenous languages in Oyo State and focuses on morphemic boundaries using acoustic and fieldwork data.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Morphemic Boundaries: The divisions between minimal meaningful units in a word.
  2. Morphological Markers: Affixes and other indicators of morpheme structure.
  3. Indigenous Languages: Native languages of a particular region.
